As we continue to grow and support out film community, we are dedicated to keeping productions in Acadiana and providing mentorship, job training and economic development to those in our region. Because of our dedication to the community, the winning project must be shot in Acadiana, fit within the $2000 budget of the grant and go through the bckstry Mentorship Program.

We are looking for captivating, unique stories that are emotionally moving.

If you only want to be a produced screenwriter, bckstry will help package the winning short film screenplay with a talented director and in-house production resources.

We are currently accepting applications from the region for a 4 -10 page story, with minimal locations that can be shot in less than 2 days. If you have a script that fits, we want to consider your screenplay!

The project must be shot in Acadiana.

    What Do I Win?

    The bckstry Film Grant winner will receive $2000 and support to help create their short film. It is not a blank check. The following rules apply:

    • Grant winners will receive 4k Cinema Production equipment to use.
    • Grant winners will also receive Production Insurance for their project.
    • Grant will be applied to pay for Cast, Mentorship Program Crew, Kraft Services & Art/Set Design.
    • Grant cannot be used to buy new film equipment, pay yourself, or members of your submitting team.
    • Grant winner will receive mentorship & guidance to create the film.

    What Are The Scripts Evaluated On?

    We are looking for captivating, unique stories that are emotionally moving. Our goal is help create films that will put our region on the map. Scripts must include a clean title page and will be judged on:

    • Originality
    • Story Structure
    • Characterization
    • Visual Inventiveness
    • Overall Viability for World-Class Film Festivals
    • Production Budget (Can the project be made for $2000)
    • Production Length (Can the project be shot in 2 days?)

    When Do I Submit?

    Submission deadlines are the following:

    • Early Deadline – July 31st, 11:59 PM.
    • Regular Deadline – September 16th, 11:59 PM.
    • Late Deadline – October 31st, 11:59 PM.
    • Winner Announcement – At Southern Screen.
    • Principle Photography must begin in 2016.

    Questions

    • Can I shoot the project outside of Acadiana? No. All principle photography must occur within Acadiana.
    • Who owns the rights to my project? The rights remain with the original creators of the project. bckstry & associated Sponsors, Donors or Individuals will receive Producer or Executive Producer credit.
    • What happens if I win a film festival or sell my project? Entrants are asked to donate 50% of proceeds to bckstry so that we can continue to offer this opportunity to fellow screenwriters, filmmakers and artists in our community.
    • If I’m the writer and/or director and/or producer, can I pay myself? No. Funds are dedicated to pay Cast and Mentors of the Mentorship Production so we can offer a learning experience for aspiring filmmakers and artists. As the Grant Winner (or Team of Winners) you forfeit your right for funds as we all collectively work to make your script a reality.
    • Can I use this grant to buy equipment for this project? No.
    • Are you going to write me a check for $2000? No. bckstry will offer production support through production coordinating, equipment, insurance and aid in hiring crew, to ensure your project gets made. We have a promise to our donors, members and community and are dedicated to making sure the project is completed up to our standards and in a timely manner.

ELIGIBILITY RULES


Void where prohibited by law.

Adults, 18 & over, only can enter.

Entrant agrees to bckstry.org terms and conditions.

Entrants, or one member of the filmmaking team, must reside in the following parishes: Evangeline Parish, St. Landry Parish, Acadia Parish, Lafayette Parish, St. Martin Parish, Iberia Parish, Vermilion Parish or Baton Rouge area.

The bckstry’s Feature Film Grant is not a game of chance. All material is read and reviewed by industry professionals.

All quarterfinalists, semi-finalists, finalists and winners are subjectively determined by our judges.

There is no limit to the number of screenplays an Entrant can enter. The same screenplay cannot be submitted multiple times under different names. If so, you will be disqualified.

Entrant must not be an immediate family member of any of the judges.

Entry fees will not be returned or adjusted.


Rules For Scripts



A CLEAN TITLE page is required for submission (please REMOVE name of writer and contact information.)

Screenplays must be 2 pages minimum and they must be less than 10 pages for short films.

Screenplays may have a max of 3 locations.

Screenplays must fall within the $2000 budget of the grant and must have 2 production days max.

There is no limit to the number of screenplays an Entrant can enter. The same screenplay cannot be submitted multiple times under different names. If so, you will be disqualified.

There are no requirements as to when the material was written.

Screenplay must be owned and submitted by the writer or owner.

Adaptations are ineligible unless the underlying rights are owned by the writer or director or the work is in the public domain.

Screenplays should be written in English and in standard industry format.

Screenplay must be the original work of the Entrant and may not be based whole or in part on any fictional or non-fictional material, published or unpublished, produced or unproduced for which the Entrant does not have rights.

The rights to the Entrant’s screenplay should not have been previously optioned or sold.

Entrant’s screenplay must not have been produced or have won any contests.

After a screenplay is entered, no new drafts or corrected pages can be made by the Entrant. No exceptions.

All material must be submitted electronically as a PDF or it will not be eligible.

Application Rules



Grants size is $2000.

Applications are accepted via electronic submission only.

Application admin fee for each project is $30 before the early deadline (July 31st 11:59pm) and then $45 until the regular deadline (September 14th 11:59pm) and $50 until the late deadline (October 31st 11:59PM.)


Application must include a screenplay and an optional project vision statement from the writer, director, producer or lead actor attached. You are welcome to include any and all relevant links to prior work in the cover letter.


There is no limit to the number of projects you may submit.


Applications must be received on or before the deadlines and application fee payment must be made in full at time of the submission.


All application fees are non-refundable


All submitted material must be original, and all rights must be wholly owned by the writer(s).


Material must be submitted by the author or owner of the material. Material written by writing teams must be submitted by one of the writers, with consent of the other(s). All writers must be credited on title page.


Substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts of the entered material are not allowed. Please proofread your script very carefully before submitting.


Contact info and name of writer must be removed from the submission.

Judging Criteria



The winners will be chosen based on the following criteria: (i) originality; (ii) story structure; (iii) characterization; (iv) visual inventiveness; and (v) overall viability for world-class film festivals and/or online distribution.

Entrants may be required to submit further information to assist in the judges’ verification of eligibility.

Any entrant may be deemed ineligible at the sole discretion of bckstry.

Finalists may be required to sign and return within seven (7) business days of receipt a notarized Affidavit of Eligibility and a Release and Indemnification and proof of valid passport and any other documents that bckstry or any other partner may require before receiving the grant.

Failure to respond to the initial notification within ten (10) days or return of notification will result in disqualification.

We reserve the right to amend these rules at any time.

Production Rules



Production will go through the bckstry Mentorship Program. The following Mentor/Mentee positions will be required to be filled: Director, Producer, 1st A.D., Cinematographer/Camera Op, Production Coordinator, Actor, Sound, Lighting, Grip, Editor.

Grant funds cannot be used to buy new equipment, pay yourself, or, if applicable, pay your submitting film team.

You must disclose if you are entering as a team upon application submission. Any lack of notification will result in automatic forfeit of submission.

Grant funds must be used to hire cast, crew, purchase props and set/costume designing.

Cyantist LLC will be donating 4k camera equipment, cinema lenses and production equipment to create your film. Any additional equipment you require must be secured on your own.

Production will executed through Cyantist LLC and production insurance will cover the production.

Copyright and Ownership



bckstry 501(c)(3), Cyantist Agency and donor will request an executive producer credit.

If the intellectual property (IP) is awarded funds through other competition submissions or if IP is sold, 20% of funds must be donated back to bckstry. These funds will help continue our development of the arts community and support another local screenwriter, filmmaker or artist with similar opportunities.

Writer credit and director and producer credit will remain with the original filmmaking team. All ownership and rights to the material submitted to this grant program remains with the original rights holder until and unless other agreements are made. Should your project be awarded funding, you are not obligated to accept it until and unless other agreements are made.

Publicity



Except where prohibited by law, participation in this program constitutes each entrant’s consent to bckstry and its agents’ and sponsor’s use of entrants’ names, likenesses, photographs, and/or personal information for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

Refund Policy



All application fees are non-refundable.

ENTRY CONDITIONS AND RELEASE



By applying for this production grant, each participant agrees to release and hold harmless bckstry llc, bckstry.org, Cyantist Agency, Cyantist LLC, its subsidiary, parent and affiliated companies, contributors, Sponsors, Donors, bckstry members (other than entrant,) and any other organizations responsible for administering, advertising or promoting this Film Grant and Film Grant Program and Promotion, and every one of their respective members, directors, employees, agents and representatives (collectively, the “Released Parties”) past and present from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liability, including but not limited to damages and negligence to property and persons, including but not limited to invasion of privacy, defamation, slander, libel, violation of right of publicity, copyright, infringement of trademark or other intellectual property rights relating to a participant’s Entry, participation in the Promotion and/or acceptance or use or misuse of Prize; provided however, that such release will not apply to any commercial exploitation of the script by a Released Party in violation of your rights under applicable copyright law; and (c) indemnify, defend and hold harmless all related parties including bckstry llc, bckstry.org, Cyantist Agency, Cyantist LLC, its subsidiary, parent, and affiliated companies, contributors, Sponsors, Donors, agents and employees from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liabilities (including reasonable attorneys fees) relating to an entrant’s participation in the Program and/or entrant’s use or misuse of awarded grant. Employees of bckstry.org, bckstry llc, Cyantist Agency, and Cyantist LLC and their immediate families are ineligible to participate in this contest. Any such submission will be immediately disqualified. This grant program is void where restricted by any Federal, State or Local law. Recipients’ eligibility will be verified before the grant is awarded and the winner may be required to sign an affidavit of eligibility.
